[New Magic Item] Lightning Staff of Drelemides
Lightning Staff of Drelemides
The giant undulating caterpillar plodded along, pulling the loudly painted wooden cart that Stork and Vistis the Blue Mage rode in.
“I believe that we were doing quite well on foot,” Stork commented, still a bit unnerved by the grisly monster that drew their cart along.
“Ah, but who was going to pull are cart and equipment? You?” Vistis the Blue Mage countered.
“We could have found a few hirelings somewhere,” retorted Stork.
“Here comes your chance, I see a small village ahead,” Vistis the Blue Mage said, pointing a gloved hand at a collection of hovels dead ahead on the road.
“There appears to be a gathering of peasants forming, perhaps you can choose among them,” he added.
Stork scowled and squinted in the noonday sun, trying to size up the potential threat ahead. As they drew closer he just saw frightened faces. An old man wandered towards them, bearing a wooden staff.
“Take this, noble sorcerers, and plague us not!” the aged peasant pleaded, bowing his head and offering the staff to the pair of wizards. As the cart drew close enough Vistis the Blue Mage reached forward and grabbed the staff.
“For now, your hovels are safe,” Vistis the Blue Mage announced. None could see, but he was grinning broadly beneath the mask. The cart passed by the sad faces of the peasants, many of them cringing at the sight of the giant caterpillar that pulled the wizards along.
“What was that all about?” Stork finally asked.
Vistis the Blue Mage raised a finger to silence Stork then gripped the staff tightly while nodding at a nearby tree.
“Grestifel!” Vistis the Blue Mage said. An eerie bolt of lighting shot from the headpiece of the staff and struck the tree, tearing it to splinters. Stork’s mouth was wide open in amazement.
“Those peasants knew that they had a magic item, but they didn’t know how to use it. Fearing us, they probably figured that we would cause more damage than holding a magic weapon that they couldn’t use was worth,” Vistis mused.
“Maybe that giant ugly caterpillar isn’t so bad to have around after all,” Stork admitted.
“And this will give Chalk and his companions a reason to sweat when we catch up to them!” Vistis the Blue Mage declared.
Created by the ancient sorcerer Drelemides, the Lightning Staff is a magically hardened weapon that is formidable in both close and ranged combat. The staff looks like a regular wooden shaft with an intricate silver headpiece and a plain silver cap on the bottom of the staff. Made to combat demons and other supernatural terrors that took less damage from cold or fire attacks, the Lightning Staff deals out a lot of damage. Many of these strange weapons were destroyed ages ago during a demonic incursion upon the plane, but it is thought that around twenty of these magic items still exist.
Benefit: The lightning staff does 3d6 points of damage in melee combat and can shoot an arc of lighting up to 100 feet away if one knows the command word. The lightning bolt does 2d12 points of electrical damage and can be used three times per day. After the third use the weapon must be recharged by setting the bottom end of the shaft into the earth for at least five hours. Usable by: Anyone who can wield a staff.
Nice, simple, & straight forward. Stork, Vistis & their caterpillar ride on…

Thank you, MoonSylver! I can see a staff like this being a bit of a surprise to those expecting a mundane staff, especially used by anyone but a wizard.
Mmmm…good point! I overlooked that!

When the fighter spins the staff and lightning zaps someone it is hard to know what else the group has up their sleeve.
