[Swords & Wizardry] New Monster: The Niliniss or Hawkpeople

The Niliniss

The mountain was much more daunting than I had first thought it would be, the climb seemed as if it would never end. I had wanted to quit this leg of the adventure several times, but with the pursuing shadow hounds below we knew that their fiendish masters must be near. Some tombs just aren’t worth robbing.

As we neared the summit I noticed a weird figure sitting hunched on a rock before us, covered all in feathers with the head of a hawk or similar bird of prey, just sitting their, calmly watching our progress.

With nothing to lose I called out a greeting to this odd creature and it cocked its head slightly and waved an arm with a scaled and claw forearm at us in a manner I translated to be friendly. Finding a niche large enough to accommodate our party I sat and talked with this hawk-man for some time and he helped us with safe passage from our pursuers and offered to help us over the mountain. While rather an odd creature, I wished later on in the deep, dark hollows we had to traverse later that we had enlisted his keen eyesight.

Niliniss, or Hawkpeople, are a race of winged humanoid hawks standing around five to six feet tall. Between their hollow bones and innate magical abilities, these proud people can fly swiftly, although they cannot carry much weight while aloft. Excellent hunters and scouts with superb vision, these weird bird-folk are often hired by adventurers to scout out wilderness areas and, despite their fierce appearance, are quite peaceful and amiable enough. Sometimes a member of a niliniss flock will decide to join a band of adventurers and make their fortune by robbing tombs and the lairs of ancient villains.

  1. Timeshadows says:

    Nice.
I like the Hawkoids from 2nd Edition Gamma World, so this fantasy version is also enjoyable.

  2. bat says:

Thank you, Timeshadows. I vaguely remember those I will need to dig up that material. The inspiration came from a sketchbook page of mine as I saw a hawk-head that I really was proud of. I tried to steer away from the 1E kenku who have devolved over the years to basically become flightless bird-like thieves.

  3. Timeshadows says:

    I allowed a PC Kenku, once. 🙂
