[Swords & Wizardry] New Spell: Conjure Vermin

Conjure Vermin

Kneel before Asagaro the Vermin Lord!” a voice boomed, echoing throughout the deep underground cavern.

There was a bit of mirthful laughter, which quickly died when the giant centipedes and giant beetles attacked, distracting the dungeon raiders from the moving carpet of vicious rats.

Conjure Vermin (Arcane)

Level 2

Range: N/A

Duration: Until creatures are destroyed or the spell is dispelled

Conjure Vermin is at once the least powerful of the summoning spells, and yet, because of the duration, also the most powerful. While the creatures summoned are not intelligent, they will obey simple commands from the spellcaster who conjured them and, in the case of rats and giant lizards, can communicate via a form of very limited telepathy (no more than three words or a basic emotion can be communicated at any given time). Conjured vermin will stay with the magic-user until dispelled or destroyed and a wizard can accumulate an unhealthy amount of these creatures. Subsequent spells, like Minionize, will affect these creatures.

Vermin Conjured:

2d12 Giant Ants

1d100 Rats

1d2 Giant Beetles (Fire)

1d6 Giant Centipedes (small non-lethal)

1d3 Giant Beetles (Basic)

1d2 Giant Lizards

  1. Lizardfolk says:

Very nice, I’m liking that one a lot.

  2. bat says:

Thank you very much. I do like the way the versatility almost works itself out. This spell sort of wrote itself.

  3. Lizardfolk says:

The real positive is you’ve made no attempt to restrict nor empower the vermin. They don’t vanish after a couple of turns but they’re also not super-powerful and monstrous.

  4. Timeshadows says:

d100 Rats, though, does seem pretty powerful to my sensibilities, but I think it is cool regardless. 😀

  5. bat says:

Thank you, Timeshadows. I was running with the idea that with Monster Summoning 1 you can get three orcs or 1 kobold. And these are regular rats, not the giant Sumatran variety (which I have encountered in earlier days and they are scary).

  6. Ryan says:

I like the balance of the spell. I just ordered the softcover core books of Lulu, and I foresee a summer of playing S&W like mad. 🙂

  7. Ryan says:

Wow. Late night horrible grammar. Sorry about that.

  8. bat says:

Ryan, no worries on the grammar at all, you are fine. I am glad you like the spell and Swords & Wizardry, I hope that you do play it like mad and let us know on the forum how your games are going.
