The Ghosts of the Wicked Monks of the Vermilion Temple

 

Bakra-do eyed the two outsiders as they looked over the map of the valley before them.

“Is it safe at night? Are there strange creatures that roam the forests?” asked the smaller of the two, some sort of hedge wizard, Bakra-do figured.

“No stranger than what you will find in the ruins that you seek,” replied the mercenary.

The two foreigners looked at each other a moment, apparently puzzled by this comment.

Chalk realized that this guy wasn’t going to crack anytime soon, he was too stoic and too honor bound.

“Very well,” replied Chalk, “we will set up camp just inside that old temple there and keep watch.”

Bakra-do nodded and started off down the trail.

“When the ghost monks attack, wizard, you had better have some magic that can harm them,” Bakra-do said.

“Can we just sleep under the stars?” asked Koram.

Many centuries ago in a faraway land a temple of monks dedicated to deities of good and charity fell into evil and depravity. Probably the worst sin of theirs was stealing from the coffers of the temple, taking the very coins that were given to feed, clothe and protect the poor and those without hope. As the gods found out about these vile acts they took action, each in turn bestowing a curse upon the monks, the final curse made them into semi-corporeal undead, doomed to scramble and claw through the world, forsaken by the gods and left to roam about the world until they are laid to rest by conquering heroes (or desperate rascals). Each of these ghostly monks looks like a cross between a man and a rodent, clad in the traditional robes of a holy monk, which now look ragged and unkempt. Normal weapons do half damage but magical weapons and spells cause full damage to these monsters.

    Very nice, a mechanically simple monster that has plenty of flavour for story. How I like ’em.

    I am trying to keep them simple and easy to toss into a game anywhere, especially when unexpected.
