[New Monster] Arcane Herons of the Jade Valley

Arcane Herons of the Jade Valley

“Something is glowing down there by that lake,” Koram whispered to Chalk.

“Glowing and moving,” Chalk added.

“Let’s get a closer look,” Koram said, moving off through the brush. Before Chalk could stop him, the fighter was crawling in the darkness.

As the two humans approached they saw that these glowing things were tall and thin waterfowl, their plumage seeming to burn with magical fire, some colored green, some blue, orange or red. These birds crouched on rocks and croaked in thin voices just above the cool water, one of the birds absentmindedly speared a fish with its sharp beak and swallowed it whole.

“What do you think one of those birds is worth back home?” whispered the fighter.

Chalk eyed the herons suspiciously, a bit nervous that they might overhear them talking.

“I don’t know,” the wizard replied quietly, “but I think one of them heard us, they are quiet.”

Suddenly the birds leaped and glided into the ferns and underbrush, their plumage lighting up the area and exposing the two explorers.

A common sight along many shores is the Great Blue Heron, a regal looking bird that stalks the shallow waters for fish and frogs and other small animals to eat. However, there is something a bit off with the herons that live in verdant luxury deep in the Jade Valley. For at night these birds conspire and plot, their plumage illuminated with a magical light, which can be seen from some distance, both giving them away to strangers and intriguing the curious to get a closer look. These weird avians can use their feet as hands and can write by holding a stylus or scratching in the dirt or mud. Three times per day (or night, as it were), each Arcane Heron of the Jade Valley can cast the following as spell-like abilities: Charm Person, Ventriloquism, Locate Object, Haste and Fireball. Intelligent and capable of speech, these tricky birds will negotiate to find lost or hidden objects in their domain, but are also capable of sending a group of adventurers to their doom.
