[New Monster] Walchostos, the Gloom Dragon

Walchostos, the Gloom Dragon

“The battle is over, King Vallos,” rumbled the gray scaled dragon as it coiled around the monarch’s high tower.

“Not yet, vile creature, my knights will arrive at any moment,” Vallos replied.

The dragon laughed, a deep, frightful laugh, King Vallos shivered despite himself.

Before the king could draw his sword the beast blew out a misty, smoky breath. Strange colors engulfed the human and he began to claw at the air. A door opened behind them, the king turned and saw a half dozen skeletons dressed in the rusty armor of knights running towards him, with a yell the kind drew his longsword and charged the knights, not realizing that they had come to save him and were not as he saw them. Then the king paused for a moment, held his left hand before his eyes, screamed in horror and leaped from the crown of the high tower.

Walchostos smiled cruelly and jumped into the air himself, but the dragon unfurled his great wings and flew off, his mission accomplished.

Three days later, as the inhabitants of the castle keep still bickered over who should be the new reigning monarch, an army of orcs and goblins lay siege to the castle.

Spawned in the fell realm of the vile god Lozag, Walchostos is a true terror, a unique dragon of exceptional intelligence and guile, a master of deception and subterfuge. Fully capable of speech and rarely found asleep (20% chance) this terrible monster is relentless when on the hunt and will go to great lengths to capture his quarry. Walchostos thinks nothing of bullying creatures like orcs, ogres, trolls or other humanoids and monsters to serve him as warriors, spies or slave labor.

As if all of the above isn’t enough, the Gloom Dragon has a special breath weapon: The Wind of Despair. Anyone caught in the area of the dragon’s breath must make a save versus Breath Attack or be caught in a living nightmare for 2d6 rounds. Those affected are -2 to hit in combat and are overcome by visions of death and decay and feelings of hopelessness. These victims sometimes see themselves or others as skeletal undead and may attack friends and companions in their delusional state.

    Very, very nice, bat. 🙂

  2. bat says:

Thank you. I figured a dragon with a strange breath effect rather than weapon might throw PCs off a little.

  3. Iguana Montana says:

With your permission, I may have to steal this idea and modify this for my 3.x campaign. *(insert evil laugh-track here)*

  4. bat says:

Don’t tell anyone, Iguana, but I like the look of the new Pathfinder core rpg book by Paizo.

Feel free to run with it!
