[New Monster] Zinge Lizard

Zinge Lizard

Gnybaro felt a tingle run up his spine. Looking up he saw gleaming reptile eyes looking at him. He heard a loud hiss.

“We need to leave, now,” the thief said, his voice wavering.

Koram slowly drew his Crystal Sword and also looked up.

“Oh lizards? I am sure that Chalk can freeze them or burn them with a spell,” the fighter said, pointing at the wizard with a thumb.

Suddenly all of the lizards snapped into action and seemed to be focusing on Chalk. Their dark green backs contrasting with their pale undersides. The creatures clawed and hissed and snapped.

Koram leaped into the fray, as did Gnybaro. Chalk was slashing furiously with a dagger at the sudden onslaught.

As the odds began to turn against them the lizards all retreated at the same time, leaving their fallen comrades behind.

“That was strange, it was almost as if…” Koram began.

“Almost as if they were intelligent and were trying to take out the wizard?” Chalk said, dusting himself off. “We had better find a place to lay low, I am sure that they will be back, in bigger numbers. Those were just scouts.”

“I’ll get some spiders to keep watch when we make camp,” Valance said.

Zinge Lizards are roughly 10-12 feet long and look like fairly harmless, omnivorous reptiles. The backs of these lizards vary from dark brown to emerald green, but their bellies are always a pale, milky white color.

Two qualities makes these lizards dangerous to adventurers. Firstly, Zinge Lizards are fast on their feet, capable of running down a human or even an elf. Secondly, Zinge Lizards are smart, very smart. Oh, they play dumb quite well, acting like dumb reptiles, but they can communicate with each other telepathically, and use this ability to organize into small gangs for hunting their prey.

The value of Zinge Lizards lies in their nests. Anyone who hatches a Zinge Lizard egg and raises the creature to adulthood will be able to speak telepathically with the creature, a strange ability conveyed to the foster parent by the growing reptile. Once someone has this ability, it can be used to speak with any Zinge Lizard. Evil sorcerers enjoy having these creatures as guardians, watchdogs and pets.

At a glance I thought it said Lounge Lizard. And then I thought: Those aren’t new monsters, they’ve been around for a long time!

Thank you for the comment, Narmer! I actually did a double take myself while reading through the post a time or two.
I suppose under the right conditions these could take the place of lounge lizards, unless they are too smart.

  3. Blair says:

I believe I may have found the de facto Planet Algol giant lizard, with humanity at large unaware of their intellect!

  4. bat says:

No! No! You can’t do that to them!

At least not without letting me know how it goes. 🙂
