[New Spell] Mageblade

Mageblade

Chalk threw a dagger into the air as the small reptilian creatures attacked, yipping and barking as they ran with rusty halberds and notched scimitars. The dagger hung suspended before the wizard and then began a slow orbit around him.

One of the kobolds lead a charge, running and barking in rage (and a little bit of nervous fear), darting passed Koram and rushing the wizard. Suddenly the dagger revolving around Chalk sunk itself deep into the lead kobold’s chest as the wizard lobbed a couple of spheres at the remaining attackers. These magic globes exploded into twin showers of biting spiders, which caused panic and terror among the tiny humanoids as their leader sunk to the ground like a sack of potatoes.

As the kobolds routed Koram and Valance looked over at the wizard, who shrugged and grinned.

“That spell was worth learning,” the wizard said.

Mageblade (Arcane)

Level 1

Range: Self

Duration: Five minutes per level of caster

When cast Mageblade causes a dagger owned by a wizard to slowly whirl around the caster, protecting them by deflecting arrows and small thrown objects or by attacking enemies who come within three feet of the wizard. This spell is meant to protect a wizard while he or she is concentrating on or casting another, more complicated spell.

Every three levels a magic-user may add another dagger, so at 3rd level the wizard may utilize two whirling daggers and can have 3 of these at 6th level.

Do the daggers autohit, or does the wizard need to roll for it? Also does it auto-deflect everything for the duration, or only the first attack?

  2. Alan says:

And if a dagger strikes an opponent or deflects an attack, is it done, or does it resume it’s orbit around the mage?

I like the idea and visual, but this may be more powerful than a lvl 1 spell (and maybe not! :>).

David, I would have the wizard roll to hit, although, you could allow one auto-hit and the dagger would then fall.

Alan, I would say that it is done, but if it works better in your game, it could go for the duration.

This spell is meant to protect a wizard while he or she is concentrating on another spell and thus should be a boost for a PC (or NPC), but not too powerful of one.

Thank you for the comments and giving me food for thought, I will need to playtest this one a little more.

    All comments are very appreciated!

Well bat, I like your stuff, and I’d like to continue to see the sort of stuff I like, so i comment. Everyone loves feedback, and if I can be helpful at the same time, then great!

It certainly is both helpful and appreciated!
