[New Magic Item] Dwarfen Delver’s Lantern

Dwarfen Delver’s Lantern

Thograk Stoneface held his strange lantern aloft. Even the normally stoic dwarf opened his mouth in disbelief.

“What is that?” Chalk whispered.

“I am not sure,” muttered the dwarf thief. “But I don’t want that creeping up on us when we set camp down here.”

Valance chanted softly, a strange, lilting sound. A giant emerald spider crept along the ceiling. The priest of the Spider God pointed at the odd creature that oozed about the cavern on questing tentacles. The spider seemed to nod and dropped upon the beast, biting and stinging, wrapping the beast up in a web strong as the strongest rope.

“That didn’t help,” Thograk Stoneface said aloud. “Now I will be dreaming of giant green spiders hunting me down.”

Dwarfs, being notorious for mining deep underground and encountering creatures that gnaw and gnash at the roots of the world, often find themselves in a bit of trouble of one sort or another. Therefore dwarfs, even with the ability to see in the dark, like to see what is beyond their limited field of vision [note, if using the Mythic Underworld idea then dwarfs need aid in seeing in the mystical underground realm just the same as humans]. A crafty dwarf many years ago created the Dwarfen Delver’s Lantern to magically assist in seeing in the dark. This magic item looks like a wooden or metallic stylized dwarf’s face on one side, with a handle and a candle-holder situated behind the face. When a candle is lit it will magically burn much slower in a Dwarfen Delver’s Lantern (at the rate of one candle per day), but also much brighter.

Benefit: In addition to a slow burning and brighter candle, the eye holes of a Dwarfen Delver’s Lantern shed light that is only seen from the point of view of the bearer of the lantern and anyone behind or to either side of the holder of the magic item. Any creature in front of the lantern that cannot naturally see in the dark cannot see the light shed from a Dwarfen Delver’s Lantern and any creature that can see in the dark will see those behind the light that this magic item sheds in a blurry and obscured manner; all attacks aimed at those behind a Dwarfen Delver’s Lantern are -2 to strike.

Usable by: Anyone.

I’d take one of those with me on every delve! Nice item, and truly a treasure!

Thank you, David! Sometimes these make sense to me. A one-way lantern is something that I haven’t seen before. If you use it in your campaign, please let me know how it goes.

Useful item. And nice Norse mythology reference in the description. 🙂

Trey, hey, thank you for the comment! Most of my dwarfs are a bit more Nordic-ey, although I love the ostritch riders of Punt from the old Bard Games Atlantean system.

  4. trey says:

Ah, yeah, I had forgotten those though I have that supplement on my shelf.

I really enjoyed that old game. I am actually surprised that nobody has glommed onto those mechanics to make a non-retro clone oldschool game. Those rules are open enough to allow for a new game to be made without copying too many of the rules to be considered a retro-clone. Hmmm…
