Spores of Mayhem
“Why is everyone staring at us like that?” Valance asked his companions. “I don’t have any obviously vicious spiders, do I?”
“No, it’s not you, it’s us,” Chalk replied quietly.
“These people are touched,” Koram said.
A peasant screamed at the top of his lungs and ran towards the adventurers. Knat muttered a spell and the handle of the man’s rake became a writing snake.
The crowd looked even more dour now.
“Uh-oh, I think that wasn’t the best idea,” Chalk observed as the peasants began snarling.
Koram drew his Crystal Sword, Nysser notched an arrow while the others began mumbling spells.
Among the subtlest and most vile of Sporecery, the Spores of Mayhem are dark, tiny fungal spores that resemble very fine black salt. Of unknown origin, this hateful fungus is sold amongst the shadier sections of a town to warmongers and ne’er-do-wells, always sealed tightly with wax or by some other means that is airtight, so as not to allow this pernicious fungus to begin working its magic.
Benefit: When these tiny spores are released onto the wind (or sometimes used to coat undead beings, constructs or automatons) they are dispersed, spreading far and wide. If a living, breathing creature comes into contact with these spores they are 75% likely to contract an arcane disease that has no save and must run its course, which lasts about one month. During that time the victims will constantly be troubled by thoughts of war, carnage and invasions and will have mild hallucinations to this end, visions of outsiders as more fearsome or bloodthirsty than they might actually be. The disease often begins in small villages and hamlets with the spreading of rumors and lies, tales begin of conquering hordes or vile monsters seen on the edge of town, this mentality becomes unavoidable. Those not affected sometimes even begin to panic or feel that some impending doom is coming. Innocent travelers are sometimes seen as frightening warlords or scouts for a great enemy. When adventurers contract this sporeceric disease they often see every being not in their group as an enemy and are leery of trading with others, hallucinating that even the most innocent merchant or peasant is a fiend of some sort or in league with them. If used in conjunction with War Spores (q.v.) entire nations will be plunged into violence and war.
