[New Monster] Norgona

Norgona

Stork kicked at the strange dark blue winged creature when the king looked the other way. The small thing looked like an evil cherub, complete with dark feathered wings. The little monster hissed at the wizard.

The sorcerer stooped low and smiled, revealing shark-like teeth. The creature whimpered and crawled over to the king.

“What has gotten into you, Gosbel?” the king laughed. “You act as if you have never seen a wizard before!”

“This wizard is mean!” cried the thing.

“Now, now, we cannot go by appearances, Stork here is just seeking safe passage to catch up with his friends!” replied the king.

Stork chuckled and to all witnessing it almost looked as if the act pained him. He patted the creature on its head even as it lurched away.

“Yes, we cannot judge by appearances, because you look like a wicked little cherub, don’t you?” the wizard said with an ominous undertone.

The norgona are infernal creatures that found their way up from the Mythic Underworld into the Land Above. It is not known how these creatures made it beyond various wards and seals, but somehow they did. Some sages believe that these creatures were not considered dangerous enough to add to the lists of fiends and these monsters were overlooked, which, as some would find out, was a grave mistake.

Commonly used as messengers to the World Above by more powerful infernal beings, these strange mosnters sometimes also come into the courts of kings and other royalty as advisers although norgona rarely miss a chance to creep into a window when nobody is looking and cause some disaster to befall those within.

In appearance the norgona look like midnight blue stocky cherubs with an evil look about them. These things are hairless and have creepy yellow eyes and a mouthful of small, sharp teeth. Norgona avoid combat whenever possible, but when forced first use a spell-like ability (either Confusion, Protection from Good or Sleep, all usable once per day) to cause as much distraction as possible then attack with wicked teeth and claws.

I love the look of these things. I’m picturing chubby, little, winged Nightcrawlers (the X-Men character that is).

I was inspired by a painting of a sulking little devil in a medieval painting while watching the Western Tradition on PBS. Weird, yeah, I know.
