[New Magic Item] Skeleton Arrows

Skeleton Arrows

Nudge cocked an eyebrow as he saw the trio of archers raising their bows to shoot over the gnome thief and his companions. He flinched instinctively as the bows twanged and the arrows sailed well above.

Chalk shrugged until the strange arrows splintered on the ground in a puff of acrid smoke and several skeletons crawled up from the earth, armed for battle. The archers knocked arrows into their bows as the skeletons advanced.

Well, that makes sense, why they shot over our heads,” Koran remarked as he drew his Crystal Sword.

Chalk shrugged and began throwing spells.

Arrows carved of bone with strange runes carved along their shafts, Skeleton Arrows are a rare and coveted magic item by archers who wander in dangerous lands. While not strong enough to win a war, these magical arrows have turned many a skirmish to the favor of the archer.

Benefit: Often fired behind an enemy, Skeleton Arrows summon 1d3 skeletons on impact. These newly summoned undead will immediately attack anyone indicated by the archer. These skeletons appear with maximum hit dice and either swords or spears and each carries a shield. These undead remain until destroyed and may even follow the archer if they survive a battle, attacking any enemies of their summoner. Deals 1d6+1 damage when used as an arrow.

Usable by: Anyone who can use a bow.

    Great item!

Thanks a million, Mr Browning! This post is the result of scouring the blog and then spending two hours sifting through books because I was sure that this must exist somewhere, but I couldn’t find it.

I’ll be using this one, for sure!

  4. brink. says:

Brilliant. Perhaps if used as a ‘normal’ arrow, the target, if slain, would animate as a skeleton…

  5. eltf177 says:

Sounds similar to the hydra’s teeth in the classic 1962 movie JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, special effects by Ray Harryhausen. I think I’ll dig that out and watch it again tonight!

Oh, I am sure that there is some residue from that movie as well as Greek mythology rattling around in my head that helped inspire this one. I thought it would be neat to ‘outflank’ and enemy (or a party) with a fairly easy, if distracting, foe.
