Nudge the gnome scurried to the source of the hiss, after all, it was in the gnomish tongue. The small thief suddenly was engulfed in an unnatural darkness and began chattering away.
“What’s going on over there?” Chalk asked.
“I’ll be right back!” squeaked the gnome.
Suddenly the darkness seemed to increase. A strange growling could be heard along nearly silent wheels. And the sound of laughing gnomes. A shadowy chariot, pulled by four strange dark lizard-like creatures popped momentarily into view.
“And we keep him?” Valance asked as he tried to focus on the strange vehicle as it raced around the ruins.
“I suppose he is handy in a pinch,” replied Chalk. “I suppose.”
The laughing gnomes tore off down a long winding corridor into deep darkness.

These creatures are rare denizens of the Plane of Shadow and even rarer on the Material Plane. Sometimes found in small nests in deep places, Shadow Salamanders are quite intelligent and sometimes will work with creatures, such as gnomes, who use them for mounts, either singly or in strange shadowy chariots pulled by up to four salamanders.
Shadow Salamanders have the ability to breathe a cloud of shadow that acts much like the ink of an octopus or squid, and can project this cloud either around themselves or any target within 30′ of the creature, the cloud has a diameter of 25′ and all combat rolls or rolls requiring sight are made at -3 while in this strange darkness (anyone mounted on a Shadow Salamander or riding a gnomish shadow chariot are immune to this affect). All shots fired into a cloud of shadow are -3 to hit their target as well due to the near impenetrable darkness. In addition, Shadow Salamanders can move or ‘leap’ from one shadow to another as long as the ‘receiving’ shadow or shade is within 40′ and can accommodate the creature’s size (and that of any riders or a chariot). This movement is similar to a Blink spell in practice that the creature can use at will as long as there are enough shadows around to ‘leap’ into. In areas of continual (unbroken) darkness the creature can move up to 150′(50′).
Gnomish chariots for these creatures can carry up to three gnomes (or two dwarfs) and have 25 hit points.
