[New Magic Item] Stone of Bridges

Stone of Bridges

“Quickly!” Chalk shouted back to the others. “We are almost upon them!”

The group of shifty dwarfs got away, somehow their stone bridge just vanished. Chalk and the Scholar of Wexos both cast spells, but the dwarfs were already gone.

“Too bad Knat wasn’t here,” commented Chalk. “A druidess would probably have a nasty surprise for those runts in the forest.”

“I agree,” replied her cousin, the Scholar of Wexos. “I hope she joins us shortly.”

Koram stooped and picked up a strange rock from the ground.

“This rock is all wet, it must have somehow been left when the bridge collapsed.”

“Let me see that,” Chalk said as he took the strange rock from the warrior’s hand.

At first this magic item appears to be nothing more than a greenish river stone that fits snugly in the palm of a hand, until one realizes that the stone is wet at all times, as if the stone itself sits under water. A curious item, few know the potential of these curiosities and they are rarely used for their intended purpose. Originally created by dwarf wizards, these odd magic items can prove invaluable in a pinch.

Benefit: Whenever a Stone of Bridges is thrown into a body of water the magic item creates a sturdy stone expanse that lasts as long as the owner of the magic item desires. This can be just long enough to get a party of adventurers across a raging river before they are overtaken by enemies or it can be to help out a community that, for one reason or another, needs a bridge. If the owner of the bridge decides that the structure has lasted long enough or that person dies, the magic item reverts back to a wet stone, at a random location within 50′ of where the bridge stood, with a 50% chance of being on either side of the body of water. This magical structure can take 65 hit points of damage before being destroyed, which will also ruin the magic item completely.

Usable by: Anyone.

I like this, something really unique and useful. Well, not quite so useful if, after wishing the bridge away so the 150 goblins on the other side of the river can’t cross after you, the rock reappears on the _goblin_ side. And even worse if their orc leader sees the rock reappear, knows what it is and how to use it…

    Run!!!,Fast!!! Now!!!

I like it when magic is a little weird and not always reliable myself, you could have the stone reappear in the owner’s hand, too.
