[New Spell] The Howling Pack

The Howling Pack

The howling waxed and waned but never went away.

Koram stalked around the room of the inn restlessly.

‘I tell you what,’ Chalk said to Valance,’I’ll appeal to the Spider God myself to get you the power to dispel that curse if you don’t do something about it soon!’

Valance gritted his teeth, the howling of ghostly hounds and the whining of the others was getting to him.

‘Okay, I’ll sort this out, it is getting to be too much to bear,’ he replied.

‘And stop taking stupid gambling bets that you are going to lose!’ shouted Koram.

The Howling Pack (Druid)

Level 3

Range: Touch

Duration: One year and one day or until dispelled.

This obscure druid’s curse allows the caster to make it seem as if a pack of ghostly hounds is surrounding the target of the spell, howling and barking incessantly. This causes no end of distraction (making the victim of the spell -2 on all rolls) it can also cause insanity-unless dispelled the target of the spell must make a save versus spells or gain an insanity tied to this curse (usually Cynophobia-fear of dogs or Phonophobia-fear of loud noises) once every three months until the curse runs its course or is dispelled. These dreadful sounds can be heard up to 80′ feet in the open and double that along corridors, halls and other confined spaces and half that through average buildings.

Yikes… seems pretty hefty. I guess it would be pretty easy for a 5th level party to deal with this, but to see it happen to NPC’s would be brutal. Pretty much an automatic ostracisation. Hmm… neat.

  2. I’ve not played Labyrinth Lord so I’m not familiar with the spellcasting rules, but if it’s similar to D&D, it seems that this spell is just too awesome for its level. It’s effectively a permanent -2 penalty. The insanity clause is just icing on the cake. And it can be handed out fairly often, as easily as once a day. Granted, there are other 3rd level spells that are more immediately applicable to combat and dungeon-delving, but on any day where there’s no fighting, there’s no reason to not drop a curse on your enemies.

I will grant you it is a powerful curse, a DM?GM can raise the level or make it easier to dispel-finding a priest or wizard to cast dispel Magic can be a quest itself.
