Deaf to Metal
Bleary-eyed the elf ranger came downstairs from his room in the cozy in. Everyone else was eating breakfast.
‘Wasn’t there a call to breakfast?’ the elf asked.
‘Yes, didn’t you hear the bell?’ replied Fellhorn the druid.
The elf ranger immediately glared at the gnome illusionist who tried to feign innocence.
‘What did you do?’ demanded the elf.
‘I just tried out a new spell…’, began the gnome.
‘Why don’t you try out your magic on someone else? It is a great way to wake up with less arrows sticking out of you, if you know what I mean,’ the elf threatened as he sat down to eat.
The gnome nodded and cast his head down in mock shame.
‘None of that drama, either, I almost missed breakfast!’ lamented the elf.
Deaf to Metal (Illusionist)
Level 2
Range: Self or Touch.
Duration: 3d4 hours.
This illusionist spell eradicates the sound of all metal objects for the target. This can be done to oneself or a willing or unwilling subject. The effect can be positive or negative, or both, depending on the situation and what the metal is being used and why (swords striking axes, a lock opening, a whistle, a bell, etc). After 3d4 hours this spell elapses and the target can normally hear metal again.

What makes the sound, when a knife scrapes on a plate out of china? The china or the knife?

I would rule that if the metal is being used to make a sound against non-metal it is silent, if reversed then it can be heard by the target. You do bring up an excellent point, I was seeing things like swords clashing, a bell with a metallic clanger, a key turning in a lock, etc.

Ah, that kind of metal, not the musical genre. Pity, I rather liked the idea of variant spells for other styles. Deaf to Disco would have been welcome in the Seventies and you could make a mint casting Deaf to Holiday Music this time of year. I wonder if you could tune the arcane formula to specific bands or even individual artists? Imagine being safe from accidental Nickelback exposure for the low, low cost of a spell slot.
Hmmm, that’s perilously close to actually useful in an espionage campaign. I could see having the spell running on two spies who use Metallica concerts as sonic cover under which they exchange secrets.
