Njirl’s Hounding Whistle
‘We have come for the whistle,’ one of the quartet said. They looked like bandits as they stood next to the table in the rustic tavern on the outskirts of town.
‘Whistle?’ Jaundo asked in an obtuse manner.
‘Whistle, now,’ the apparent leader of the bandits said, a little more sternly.
An unearthly howl could be heard, the type that chills the blood when heard after dark. One of the bandits shivered.
‘Look, that’s our boss, the Shadow Hound, a warg that came from the Shadowlands, he wants that whistle or he might start eating us,’ the shaken bandit confessed.
‘Sounds like your problem,’ Uzeb the Wise snarled as he let loose a spell. Something like a porcupine erupted from under the table, sparking quills flashed through the air and hit the bandits as the wizard pushed the fighter towards the door.
‘Under no circumstances do we surrender that whistle of yours with that monster out there,’ Uzeb said to Jaundo who barely was aware of what was going on enough to draw a sword.
Said to have been created by a clever oread adventurer, this whistle’s wielder has, over the ages, gained the ire of many who use summoned canines as guards and/or companions.
Benefit: This enchanted whistle, when winded, will calm any canine within earshot (about 75′). This also affects intelligent canines like gnolls and even werewolves, who will tend not to attack the bearer of the whistle and might, if they fail a Save vs Petrification, even act friendly towards the one sounding the whistle. Extra-planar canine creatures such as barghests and hell hounds are more resistant to this whistle at first, receiving a +2 to their saving throw. If these latter creatures are further exposed to the whistle (hearing it winded three consecutive days) they will now befriend the owner of the whistle and stay by their side whereas even more terrestrial canine creatures will be able to go their own way.
Usable by: Anyone.

Neat concept. Assuming that most humanoids can’t hear the whistle at all, this would be really useful for getting past guard dogs. Bit less so if the two-legged guards can hear you while you’re tooting away. 🙂

I imagine gnolls get a bit more frothy with this whistle in the area.
