[New Magic Item] Klaksnick’s Clanging Cymbals

Klaksnick’s Clanging Cymbals

Uzeb the Wise watched the goblin warband reduce the bandits to their own size and cut the bewildered humans down.

“What are you thinking now?” asked a curious Jaundo.

“If we can get in front of those goblin cymbals and yet not engage them in combat, we could probably slip into their tunnels and move around freely without constantly banging our heads on the ceiling,” the wizard replied.

Jaundo took a few moments to ponder this, as he realized that when the bandits were shrunk down in size, they became frantic and hysterical.

Weatherbeaten and with a fine patina, these cymbals don’t look particularly fearsome, yet they are handy in combat. Noted for being the downfall of the cruel orc warlord Vhangkul-Xab.

Benefit: When these enchanted cymbals are sounded, anyone facing the ‘musician’ must Save vs Spells or become one size smaller: Large to Medium, Medium to Small, etc. Creatures that are Gargantuan to Huge receive a +2 to their save. Each size reduction halves Hit Dice and Damage dealt. Only one size reduction per turn (ten minutes) is possible, yet the awful cacophony of the cymbals must still be endured. Size reverts after one day.

Usable by: Anyone.

Given that the mechanical impact here is much greater the larger the victims are to begin with (halving the HD and damage of a giant is much nastier than halving a human or goblin) I wouldn’t be surprised to see some canny giant chieftain claiming a set for themselves (probably after killing the former owner with a barrage of rocks from a safe distance). They might need to play them like castanets, but shrinking down the kind of large enemies that can give giants a hard time (eg dragons, chimeras, purple worms) would be a huge advantage – and a good way to keep any rebellious tribesfolk in line.
